The Jobu Shin Kan --School of Strong Martial Spirit-- in Eureka, CA began in the garage of Professor Dennis Estes in 1987. One year later, the dojo moved into a historic building in Old Town Eureka where it thrived for 18 years before the location was lost to fire on December 8th 2006. On January 2nd 2007, the Jobu Shin Kan re-opened at 205 Fourth Street in downtown Eureka.

Sensei Jon Sylvia took over stewardship of the dojo in 2003. A lifelong Judo wrestler and Jujitsu practitioner, Sensei holds a nationally recognized 4th degree black belt in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu. In addition to running the Jobu Shin Kan, Sensei Sylvia teaches police tactics courses for the local police adademy.

Jobu Shin Kan is a family-run, community-oriented traditional martial arts school dedicated to positive cultivation of character through the study of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu. Our purpose is to provide a healthy and safe atmosphere to support the physical and mental growth of our students in their all-around pursuit of excellence.

To ensure excellence, we are committed to the Philosophies of Jujitsu and the Esoteric Principles as handed down by Master Okazaki.

We currently have about 50 students attending the Jobu Shin Kan. We welcome all ages, all sizes, and all body types. Our school is family oriented and encourages families to learn together under a special family rate.
